Why visit Viterbo?
By Sammy Browne, USAC Student
Everyone’s asks why live or visit Viterbo? What makes it more special than any other Itlaian city? Viterbo is a city that has everything. Want to be immersed in medieval history just walk around the towns stunningly preserved architecture. Every spot has historical significance and is one of the most culturally rich cities without the long lines and crowded tourist traps. Palazzo dei Papi is one of my personal favorites it is not only rich in history and religious significance but also offers stunning views of the city. If churches are your fortee inside the walls offers some hidden gems but a short bus ride or walk on Viale Trieste to Santuario Basilica Santa Maria Della Quercia will reward you with more magnificent architecture and detailed paintings all of course amazingly preserved. There is no lack of history in this town.
Looking for a relaxing day? Look no further than Terme di Papi for a paid hot springs or Bullicame for a free similar experience with less people. Looking for a day surrounded by nature? Monte Cimini or Monte Cimino is the ideal place. This volcanic created hill offers a calming walk through the trees or for the more adventurous, a hike.
Further your relaxation with a nice trip to the nail salon. Sunflower Nails Viterbo located on Via Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour is the best nail salon. Their attention to detail and friendly staff leaves you with a personalized experience unlike any other and their attention to detail haves you leave the salon with nails that will last.
As for the food Viterbo has an excellent selection. The pizza and pasta restaurants all serve fresh italian food with an authentic italian taste and service. Unlike other cities that have chain restaurants the family owned restaurants of Viterbo have perfected their recipes and the taste speaks for itself. Other than Italian food Viterbo offers Chinese restaurants, brazilian sushi joins, or even Mcdonalds and KFC. There isn’t a lack of options in this town. Another food related thing Viterbo excels at is it’s wine. There is no shortage of wine restaurants and wine tastings. Each place has an excellent selection of wine at fair prices with its sells very knowledgeable about which wine pairs with each food option.
The main thing people tell me they love about this town specifically is that it feels personalized. Viterbo offers everything a big town does but still keeps its small town roots.
