Viterbo’s best Fast foods
by Emily Swett, USAC student
As an American I love nothing more than fried potatoes, sinking my teeth into the crunchy crisp potato and hearing the satisfying snap of a chip. Living abroad I decided to go on the hunt for the best chips in Viterbo, compiling a list for other pringle junkies to indulge. Here are my top ten chip destinations for when you’re visiting Viterbo:
- Throughout the small historic streets of Viterbo, there are many mom and pop shops that offer a variety of things, from the newest fashion to the best pizza, they never seem to disappoint. Amongst the lined streets stands a little eatery known as Patatuscia; Patate Fritte Nostrane on the street Via Marconi 13. Known in town for their delicious and delectable “Tuscia Chips” the stand-alone food shop offers a variety of afternoon snacks and quick lunch bites. Hot dogs, hamburgers, paninis, and of course fish and chips; can all be found and hand-made right in front of you. The owner always slices fresh potatoes to order, frying them to order, and seasoning them to order; even topping the basket of chips off with any kind of sauce you want. The paninis are incredible and the freshly sliced and smoked salami will leave your mouth watering for more. The friendly atmosphere makes everything that much better, the owner promoting other stores and events within the city via flyers and posters. Patatuscia is definitely a place to visit while in the city of Viterbo.
- Tony’s is a delectable little side burger shack that comes to life after 11pm, the drunk and the hungry ascending to devour the savory chips they produce. Covered in a heavy dose of salt and love, the cooked to perfection chips break into a satisfying crunch. Tony’s is a local hut that seems to be invaded every session by Study Abroad goers in search of their home lands food. It’s a great place to meet people from all corners of the globe and all walks of life. Located off of Via Cardinal Pietro la Fontaine 7 in Viterbo, Tony’s Street Food is a must stop for tourists who want to feel like locals.
- Porca Vacca is another huge hamburger and chip restaurant for locals here in Viterbo. Housed outside of the walled city, Porca Vacca offers a different perspective of hamburgers and chips, more akin to those of the American Five Guys than any other. The friendly open atmosphere attributes to the hamburger joint as a true local hang out. The chips provided seem to have too little salt for my own personal tastes, but if the constant pizzas and spaghetti is starting to distress you, I highly recommend Porca Vacca. The chips are fried until they have a delectable soft and crunchy outer-coating, and the olive oil they were once submerged in is still obtainable with each bite. Located on Via Luigi Rossi Danielli 2, Porca Vacca is a great place to spend the afternoon.
