In the Viterbo and cooking tour, you’ll visit the biggest medieval historical center in Europe and you’ll learn all the secrets of the local cuisine!
Just a few minutes from Viterbo city center, there is a 15th century manner that was renovated few years ago to become a charming farmhouse. The family run organic farm cultivates olive groves, ancient cereals, fruits and lavender that are skillfully processed to become excellent extra virgin olive oil, biscuits, jams and lavender house & body products. The day tour begins with a nice walk in the countryside to visit the farm and its productions followed by the collection of vegetables from the orchard. Later, under the guidance of the farm owner you’ll learn to transform them into delicious traditional dishes. After being delighted with a lunch cooked by yourself, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of Viterbo and its medieval neighborhoods. A town of 65,000 inhabitants, Viterbo was first settled by the Etruscans, whose traces were discovered right on the hill where the Cathedral now stands. In Roman times, the city became a strategic intersection along the busy Via Cassia. In the 12th century, work began on the city’s massive defense walls, which are wholly intact even today. The various gates providing an opening in the walls lead to the medieval town centre, including the splendid quarter of San Pellegrino, Palazzo dei Priori and Palazzo dei Papi. Palazzo dei Papi, or the “Popes’ Palace”, is so called because it was the place chosen by the Roman popes as their abode for several decades. They added buildings and monuments to Viterbo, turning it into a city of worldwide importance.
