A wonderful lake set in the bowl of an extinct volcano that was formed over 300,000 years ago. Bolsena town is an international touristic destination, with a lovely medieval historic centre, which features a Fortress and a Cathedral.
The private tour departs from Bolsena for a guided tour of the medieval village set around the homonymous Lake. Not only is Bolsena the largest of Lazio’s three main lakes (Bracciano, Vico and Bolsena), it’s the largest lake of volcanic origin in all of Europe. More built up than Lake Vico, and therefore more tourism-oriented, Lake Bolsena was formed over 300,000 years ago by a volcano in the Volsini mountain range. In 264 BC, when the Romans defeated the Etruscan inhabitants of Volsinii Veteres, now Orvieto, they moved on to Bolsena, calling it Volsinii Novi, from which the current town of Bolsena gets its name. An international tourist destination, Bolsena has a lovely historic centre, featuring the basilica of Santa Cristina and the medieval Monaldeschi Fortress, which affords a breath-taking view of the sunset over the lake. In June, the town fills with floral decorations (the infiorate) for the religious holiday Corpus Christi, established by Pope Urban IV after the famed Eucharistic Miracle occurred right here in Bolsena in 1263. After visiting the town, its fortress and its cathedral, you’ll be delighted by a lunch at a local restaurant on the shores of the lake where you’ll enjoy an authentic dishes from the Lake area. During summer months (from April to October)*, in the afternoon, you’ll enjoy a boat trip on the lake before shopping at the local workshops and boutiques!
