Tuscia was first and foremost the homeland of the Etruscans, the ancient predecessors of the Romans in Central Italy. The area boasts archaeological sites of inestimable value.
An ancient Etruscan city surrounded by unspoilt nature: such is the Archaeological Naturalistic Park of Vulci, located in the municipality of Montalto di Castro and just 14 km from the town centre. The Etruscan and roman findings of the Archaeological Park as well the Mitreum and the ceramic artefacts displayed in the Archaeological Museum within the medieval castle of Abbadia give us a fascinating glimpse of history. And in Vulci, the natural surroundings are just as stunning: this is the heart of the Lazio Maremma area. Here is where the River Fiora flows, where we find the “Devil’s Bridge”, a masterpiece of Roman engineering standing 300 feet tall. In the summer, the area hosts the “Vulci Festival”, featuring theatre, music and dance. After the tour, you’ll enjoy a lunch featuring authentic local dishes at the restaurant located inside the Park. In the afternoon, you’ll proceed towards Tarquinia, a wonderfully preserved historic centre; one of the most important archaeological museums in all of Italy; and above all, an Etruscan Necropolis so unique as to be declared UNESCO World Heritage: this is the combination that makes Tarquinia a must-see, one of Tuscia’s greatest treasures. The necropolis, located on the high ground at Monterozzi, includes an astonishing 6,000 Etruscan tombs, 200 of which are finely painted, such as the famous Tomb of the Jugglers and Tomb of the Leopards.
