Two authentic gems of Tuscia: Civita di Bagnoregio, the fascinating dying city, and the renaissance Park of the Monsters of Bomarzo, which features a number of volcanic rocks shaped to form fantastic sculptures.
The private tour departs from the view point of Civita di Bagnoregio for a guided tour of the village. A real gem, this town’s fame reaches well beyond Tuscia. Set in the verdant Valle dei Calanchi valley, Civita di Bagnoregio is a tiny village perched atop a tuff cliff. Two aspects set this town apart: its isolation, it can only be reached via a long, steep, pedestrian bridge, and the fact that, because the valley and the cliff itself are progressively and naturally eroding, Civita is slowly disappearing, hence its nickname, the “dying city”. Civita is also home to the grotto of St. Bonaventure, the celebrated medieval philosopher and St. Francis’ first biographer. The Saint was born here and the grotto was where he would meditate and pray. After touring Civita di Bagnoregio you’ll have a lunch in one of its authentic local restaurants featuring traditional dishes and local wine. In the afternoon, you’ll move to Bomarzo to visit the amazing Park of the Monsters. These 3 hectares of garden feature a number of volcanic rocks shaped to form fantastic sculptures: ogres, dragons, giant turtles, leaning houses, elephants and the list goes on. Commissioned by the former Papal soldier Vicino Orsini between 1552 and 1580, the park is a treat for the eyes and truly one of a kind.
