Tuscia is the land where the Etruscans settled in pre-Roman times. Their traces can still be found in the necropolises, sophisticated burial cities scattered throughout the area, in addition to a wealth of pre-Roman relics. Etruscan cemeteries are famous throughout the world as exemplary funerary art, including finely painted tombs of various shapes and sizes. The landscape is hilly, dotted with valleys, volcanic lakes, woods, castles and villages perched atop hills surrounded by an extremely green and unspoiled nature. Against this enchanting backdrop, history and nature, past and present come together. Due to its richness and in terms of natural environment and archaeological sites reachable by walking paths the area is the perfect context for archaeo-trekking. Following a rock-cut Etruscan way you’ll reach the Etruscan Necropolis of Castel’d’Asso, where you can admire some of the best preserved tombs in all of ancient Etruria. Set deep in a limestone valley, the necropolis, dating to a period between the late 4th and 2nd century BC, features ancient tombs hewn directly from the rock, some of which could host dozens of the dead. After visiting this fascinating site, a gourmet picnic on the ruins of the medieval castle of Castel d’Asso will refresh you. The castle is located on a little hill a few hundred meters from the necropolis and offers a wonderful view of the valley.
