Blera is a little village in the province of Viterbo with a celebrated Etruscan past (before its Roman and medieval history, as we can see from the local castle). Proof of its history as an Etruscan settlement, which remains somewhat mysterious, can be found in the nearly necropolis of San Giovenale (6 km from the current town), set in verdant surroundings. The excavations began in the mid-20th century upon the request of the 75-year-old King of Sweden, Gustav VI, a great archaeology enthusiast who often made a personal appearance at the excavations, pick-axe in hand.
