Parco Regionale Della Maremma
by Rebecca Ruhstaller – USAC Intern
When I think Tuscany I imagine vineyard after vineyard with huge villas behind them. While I saw plenty of countryside and agricultural land, the real gem located in Tuscany is the natural reserve Maremma Park. This huge reserve really has it all; wetlands, pinewoods, historical watch towers and a breathtaking view of the Tyrrhenian sea.
The first part of our hike started with a walk through the pinewood which allowed us to get a look at many of the aromatic mediterranean brushes such as juniper and rosemary. Through our two hour hike we were able to see a wide array of plant life as well as many insects native to the region.
This is the perfect outdoor day trip for nature lovers of all kinds. With hikes ranging from easy two hour treks to more difficult six hour treks, there is something for everyone in Maremma Park and you can reach it in less than 1 hour from Viterbo!0
