By: Jacqueline Phan USAC Student
Viterbo and its surrounding are among the most un-tourist populated areas in all of Italy but did you know they have some of the most beautiful attractions? Whether you want to visit to see the vast collections of history, archeology, art, or simply just for Instagrammable places, Viterbo has it all! The authentic city is designed with medieval architecture dated back to the Renaissance period everywhere you go and here I’m about to share one of the most breathtaking landmarks.
Just a couple of hours from Viterbo, in the small town of Tivoli, you can find Villa D’Este. It’s a blast into the past with its grand palace dating back to the 16th century. This intricately designed palace and garden has defined the Renaissance era for exterior landscape design. Upon entering the center of it all, you will see two grand stair cases surrounding Fontana Dei Draghi Vista. Here, you can marvel in the fine carvings of the fountain and statues that are within. You will truly be astonished by the wonder of how such history exists today.
Next, you can walk up the stairs to Fontana Dell’Organo where you get the overlook of the entire garden below. The view is completely breathtaking as you overlook the three reflecting pools that shimmer as the sun hits, the mosaic overlay that engulfs the exterior design, and let’s not forget the quadrilateral designed gardens that are similar to that of the Vatican Garden.
Art and culture lovers can come and appreciate one of the oldest and still standing historic pieces of Baroque art. You’ll find sculptures throughout the whole villa! It is perfect for trying to get in touch with the historic background of the architecture, or taking a selfie to capture the beauty of it all.
The reasons to visit this historic landmark is limitless and no words can truly represent the feelings of actually being there. So, if you’re looking for a peaceful getaway, or if you are a lover of art, take a walk through the gardens of Villa D’Este in Tivoli to get a true experience of self-reflection as you indulge in the Renaissance period.
After spending a perfect day at La Villa D’Este in Tivoli, come back to Viterbo and get an authentic Italian dish near Lake Bolsena to get a gorgeous view.
